The Lectionary, The Church Year,

and The Bible in Worship

The Lectionary

Made up of three years:  A, B, and C
Follows the pattern of the Synoptic Gospels, Matthew, Mark and Luke
The Daily Office is composed of Year 1 and Year 2

The Church Year

Advent (Blue or Purple)—the four weeks leading up to Christmas. Advent means “coming.”
Christmas (White)—12 days long, just like the song
Epiphany (Green)—Focuses on the Coming of the Magi. Times varies.
Lent (Purple)—40 days before Easter. From the English, means “Spring.”
Easter (White)—50 days long until Christ’s return.
Pentecost Sunday (Red)—Christ’s return and the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Season after Pentecost aka Ordinary Time (Green) the longest season of the year.

The Bible and How We Read It

The sacred text that our whole church is founded upon. The most important part of the “three legged stool.” The Holy Scriptures of the New and Old Testaments are the Word of God.

Understanding the genres:

Old Testament

  • Pentateuch- Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy
  • Historical books such as Samuel and Kings
  • Literature- Psalm and Proverbs
  • Prophets, both Major and Minor

New Testament

  • Gospels (includes Acts)
  • Letter/Epistles
  • Revelation (an apocalypse)
